across pakistan where she has been a vocal campaigner for girls' education. she was targeted by the taliban because of it. now, public anger has turned against the militants. her father who has vowed to return the family to pakistan has expressed his gratitude. >> when she stood pakistan turns and this is a turning point, which is not only my daughter, but daughter of everybody. >> reporter: doctors here at the queen elizabeth hospital in birmingham talk of her very good progress. the head wound is no longer infected and it does not appear to be any brain damage. her vision and hearing appear good, although they're still being tested and let's say she has a very good recollection of the traumatic events that brought her here. she's not forgotten her cause either. one of the first things she asked, says her father, is whether he brought her school books. a sign of how determined this young girl remains. all right, doctors do, though, say, that there is a long way for her to go. a lot of reconstructive surgery she has to have done on her head. remember, the bullet shattered her

provided by the department of education have be sent to all 26 public housing developments in zone a, they're available to take the 45,000 residents in these areas to designated shelters, flyers have been posted in one of these developments and staff is knocking on doors to alert residence about the mandatory evacuations. the nypd is making voumts in those developments and throughout zone a and loud speakers in some of the squad cars. residents can also call 311 to find out where to get busses and to get help with those evacuations. 7:00 p.m., all elevators in those 26 developments will be shut off. heat and hot water will also be shut off. so if you live in one of those developments it's imperative that that you get to a safe location out of zone a before that time. all school based after school programs are closed tomorrow as well. as are most other after school programs. let me give you some other updates on city operations. the department of homeless services has enhanced street outreach to encourage people on the street to seek shelter. street outreach will continue during the -- city

where want your education to lead, while you're still in school, you might find the best route... leads somewhere you weren't even looking. let's get to work. >>> thousands of people in new jersey had to flee safety today as flooding overwhelmed their towns. rescue teams trying to do house to house helping those who could not leave on their own. it has also been a harrowing 24 hours for hundreds of sick patients who had to be evacuated from the nyu medical center during super storm sandy. the hospital which is just a block from the east river which is basically across town in that direction and a little bit uptown in the 30s, they had a backup generator. the backup generator failed. patients had to be, get this, carried down multiple flights of stairs with flashlights giving the only illumination. can you imagine trying to do that? for some of the tineiest patients, the infants on ventilators, nurses had to manually pump air into the little babies' chests. patients were taken to five different hospitals, including mt. sinai. the most critically ill obviously were moved first. a dramatic

that here, governor. this governor was the education governor that all of us looked at with admiration. and he can describe this better than i can but one thing he did is grade schools to determine which ones are succeeding and which ones weren't and if a school is not succeeding why the kids in the school given the ability to go to another school. could be a charter school or another public school so kids got choice in part based upon the success of the schools. and i intend to do the same thing, helping all the states across the country, one, make sure that schools are graded so parents tell which ones are succeeding and which aren't. federal dollar that is we give to states and localities, two big buckets. one is called title i and then iaed money. the dollars will be funneled to students so if a child wants to go to a different school or parents do, they have the capacity to do that. >> the governor speaking to a rousing rally in tampa, florida, at the international airport there. and to be sure, the campaign is back on track for the governor. he's on to the stump speech specifical

girl shot by the taliban for promoting girls education. since she arrived for treatment nearly three weeks ago. matthew chance is outside the hospital. i asked him how she's doing. >> malala yousafzai, that 15-year-old activist from pakistan, is now inside this hospital in birmingham in central england surrounded by her family, recovering from that gunshot wound in the head, inflicted by the taliban. latest video, the first video in fact we've seen of the 15-year-old since she was medivaced from pakistan earlier this month to receive emergency treatment here, you see her sitting in the bed, sitting up. she's alert, she's awake. doctors say they expect her to make a full recovery, especially now that her father and mother and two brothers are around her giving her all the support that she needs. there's been a great deal of concern of course, an outpouring of support around the world for malala. she has really become a symbol of bravery around the world for what she did and for what she intends to do when she goes back, because she has every intention according to her family of going
